Ad Creative

In short

An ad creative is the visible part of an ad: the image, video or carousel together with the text, headline and call to action that your audience actually sees.

Also known as: Creatives

An ad creative is the part of an ad your audience actually sees: the image, video or carousel together with the ad copy, headline and call to action. Audience, budget and bid strategy decide who an ad is shown to. The creative decides whether someone stops scrolling and clicks.

Components

  • Visual: Image, video, carousel or collection.
  • Hook: The first one to three seconds of a video, or the core message in the image.
  • Copy and headline: Value proposition, objection handling, social proof.
  • Call to action: e.g. "Learn more", "Sign up" or "Get quote".

Why creatives matter more than ever

As platforms like Meta automate more and more of the audience and placement decisions, for example with Advantage+, the creative has become the biggest lever you still control. The algorithm uses the image, the text and people's reactions to figure out who to show the ad to, so different creatives often reach different people. Example

A coach tests two creatives with a $1,500 budget each. Creative A (testimonial video) gets a 1.8% click-through rate and 75 leads at $20. Creative B (explainer graphic) only gets 0.9% and 50 leads at $30. Four weeks later, the CRM shows A brought in 3 sales and B brought in 7. The creative with the more expensive leads was the more profitable one.

Evaluating creatives in lead generation

Ad platforms judge creatives by clicks and leads, because that's all they see. In lead generation, though, what counts is which creative brings in leads that later buy. For that, deals and revenue have to be attributed to the individual ad.

LeadMetrics attributes leads, deals and payments to the ad the lead came from. In Ad Analysis you compare up to 4 ads with 3 metrics each side by side, even across projects, for example cost per lead, cost per deal and ROAS. Learn more about the dashboards.

Common mistakes

  • Only testing variations of the same idea: A different background color isn't a new creative. Test different messages and formats.
  • Turning creatives off too early: After 200 impressions you can't tell anything yet.
  • Deciding on click-through rate alone: Creatives that get lots of clicks don't automatically bring in buyers.

Frequently asked questions

There is no fixed number. In practice, 3 to 6 clearly different creatives per ad set is a good start: enough choice for the algorithm, but not so many that the budget gets spread too thin.
