Impressions

In short

Impressions count how often an ad was displayed in total. If the same person sees it several times, every view counts as a separate impression.

Also known as: impression, ad impressions

Impressions count how often your ad was displayed in total. Every time it is served counts – even when the same person sees it multiple times. Impressions are the basis of almost every other ad metric: CPM, click-through rate and frequency are all calculated from them.

Formula

Impressions are counted by the ad platform. The most important derived metrics:

CPM                = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000
Click-through rate = clicks ÷ impressions × 100%
Frequency          = impressions ÷ reach

Example

A TikTok campaign costs $3,000 and is served 250,000 times. That is a CPM of $12. With 3,750 clicks, click-through rate is 1.5%.

If those 250,000 impressions were seen by 100,000 people, each person saw the ad 2.5 times on average.

Impressions in lead generation

Impressions are the top of the funnel, not the result. They tell you how much visibility your budget buys – but nothing about whether it turns into inquiries. They are most useful as a denominator: how many leads and how much revenue do you get per 1,000 impressions? That lets you compare campaigns with very different budgets fairly.

LeadMetrics syncs spend and daily metrics of your ads from Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn and links them with leads and deals from your CRM. That way you see, ad by ad, whether impressions actually turn into revenue.

Impressions vs. reach

Reach counts people, impressions count views. A campaign with 250,000 impressions may have reached 200,000 people once each or 50,000 people five times each. That makes a big difference when you evaluate it – so always look at impressions together with reach and frequency.

Common mistakes

  • Treating impressions as success: A view alone doesn't mean the ad had any effect.
  • Comparing platforms directly: What counts as an impression differs by platform and format.
  • Rising impressions without checking frequency: More impressions at the same reach just means the same people see the ad more often.

Frequently asked questions

Every time an ad is displayed on a screen. Whether the person consciously noticed it doesn't matter. The exact definition, for example when a video counts as viewed, is set by each platform.
