Touchpoint
A point of contact between customer and brand
In short
A touchpoint is any single point of contact between a prospect and your brand – for example an ad click, a website visit, an email or a phone call.
Also known as: touch point
A touchpoint is any single point of contact between a prospect and your business. Put together, all touchpoints make up the customer journey.
Types of touchpoints
- Paid touchpoints: Ads on Meta, Google, TikTok or LinkedIn – seen or clicked.
- Owned touchpoints: Website, landing pages, newsletters, webinars.
- Organic touchpoints: Search results, social media posts, referrals.
- Personal touchpoints: Phone calls, consultations, trade shows.
For attribution, the measurable digital touchpoints matter most – contacts that carry a traffic source via UTM parameters or click IDs.
Example
A recruiting company is hiring nurses. One applicant has these touchpoints:
- Sees a TikTok ad, doesn’t click
- Two days later, clicks a Meta ad and looks at the job page
- Comes back via a Google search for the employer
- Applies through a funnel
- Has a phone interview and gets hired
Website tracking captures touchpoints 2 to 4. Touchpoint 1 is only visible to TikTok, touchpoint 5 happens in the CRM or applicant tracking system.
Touchpoints in lead generation
The more touchpoints a journey has, the more important it is how you split the credit. First-click attribution rewards the first captured touchpoint, last-click attribution the last one, and multi-touch attribution spreads the value across several.
LeadMetrics captures visits and traffic sources with a single script and shows them per lead as a journey timeline with click history. Leads from funnels and iframes, for example from Heyflow or Perspective, can also be matched to the original session. Learn more about lead tracking.
Common mistakes
- Only looking at ad clicks: Organic visits and direct traffic are part of the journey too.
- Missing UTM parameters: Without a source, a touchpoint can’t be assigned to the right channel.
- Forgetting offline touchpoints: Phone calls and meetings often decide the deal but only show up in the CRM.
