Click-to-Message Ads

Ads that open a chat instead of a website

In short

Click-to-message ads open a chat in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram Direct or TikTok direct messages after the click, instead of sending people to a website.

Also known as: click-to-message, click-to-WhatsApp ads, messaging ads

Click-to-message ads don't send people to a website after the click. They open a chat instead: in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram Direct or TikTok direct messages. Prospects ask questions there, answer qualifying questions and leave their contact details.

How they work

Meta offers click-to-message ads with several objectives, including leads. The qualifying questions then run as an automated chat. Replies can come from team members or an AI agent such as Meta's Business Agent. TikTok offers comparable ads for direct messages.

Measurement in lead generation

Because the person never visits your website, there are no UTM parameters, no click ID in the URL and no session in website tracking. At first, only the platform knows which ad the lead came from. To evaluate all the way to the deal, you need:

  • campaign and ad stored with the lead in the CRM,
  • an email address or phone number as the link to later deals,
  • results sent back to the platform, at Meta through the Conversions API for Business Messaging with the click-to-WhatsApp ID ctwa_clid.

Common mistakes

  • Counting conversations as success: A chat isn't a qualified lead yet.
  • Not storing the source: The CRM only says "WhatsApp", not which ad.
  • Slow replies: A chat creates the expectation of a quick response.

Frequently asked questions

The ad platform counts conversations or leads in the chat itself. Website tracking doesn't see them, because the person never visits the website. To attribute deals to the ad, campaign, ad and contact details from the chat have to be carried into the CRM. Meta accepts results back through the Conversions API for Business Messaging.
