AI Agent

In short

An AI agent is an AI system that completes a task on its own over several steps: it fetches data, uses tools and decides on the next step instead of just answering a single question.

Also known as: AI-agent

An AI agent is an AI system that doesn't just answer, it acts. It gets a goal, picks suitable tools, fetches data and decides on the next step based on the results.

How an AI agent works

An agent usually has three parts:

  • Language model: understands the task and plans the steps, for example Claude.
  • Tools: interfaces to data sources and software such as ad accounts, CRM or analytics. A common standard for this is the Model Context Protocol.
  • Rules: what the agent may do, when it asks and when it hands over to a human.

AI agents in performance marketing

Several specialized agents can be combined into an AI marketing team: one researches, one writes, one reviews, one analyzes. In lead generation, the value depends mostly on the data. An agent that only sees leads optimizes for cheap leads. Only with deals and revenue from the CRM can it tell which ads bring customers.

Via the LeadMetrics MCP server, Claude can act as an agent and query campaign data down to ad level, including leads, deals and ROAS, without seeing personal lead data.
