Lookalike Audience
In short
A lookalike audience is a target audience an ad platform builds from people who closely resemble a source list you provide, such as your best customers.
Also known as: lookalike-audience, look-alike audience
A lookalike audience is a target audience an ad platform builds automatically from users who resemble a source list you provide. The platform analyzes shared traits and behavior patterns in the source list and finds people who match them but haven't been in touch with you yet. The term comes from Meta; other platforms have similar concepts.
How a lookalike audience is created
- Pick a source list: e.g. customers, buyers from the last 180 days, or website visitors.
- Set country and size: On Meta, roughly 1% to 10% of a country's population. 1% is the most similar, 10% the broadest.
- Use the audience in campaigns: The platform refreshes it regularly.
Example
A financial advisor builds two lookalikes: one from all 2,000 leads of the past year, one from the 250 leads that actually became clients. On the same budget, the first brings in more leads, but the second brings in more closed deals – because the platform looks for people who resemble buyers, not form fillers.
The quality of the source data decides
A lookalike audience is only as good as the list it's built from. In lead generation this means: if you feed the platform all your leads, you get more of the same – including lots of poor-fit contacts. A list of customers or high-value deals works better.
That information lives in the CRM, though, not in the ad account. This is where the Conversion API helps: if you send events like "deal won" or "purchase" to the platform, it knows who actually bought and can use that for its optimization too. LeadMetrics sends events like these from HubSpot, Close, Stripe, CopeCart or Digistore24 to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn through the Conversion API. Common mistakes
- Source list too small or too broad: Both dilute the similarity.
- Using all leads as the source: The platform then finds people who like filling out forms, not buyers.
- Outdated lists: Static lists that are never updated lose their value.
