Performance Max
Google's all-channel campaign type
In short
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that runs ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from a single campaign and uses AI to manage bids and placements.
Also known as: PMax, Performance Max campaign
Performance Max (PMax for short) is a Google Ads campaign type that runs on all Google channels from a single campaign: Search, YouTube, the Display Network, Gmail, Discover and Maps. You provide text, images, videos, audience signals and a conversion goal. Google decides where, to whom and at what bid the ads are shown.
Strengths and weaknesses
- Reach: One campaign reaches users across all Google surfaces.
- Low effort: AI handles bids, placements and asset combinations.
- Little control: How much budget goes to which channel is only visible in the channel report, and you can only steer it to a limited extent.
- Depends on the signal: The campaign optimizes for exactly the conversion goal you give it, even if that's just a submitted form.
Performance Max in lead generation
For leads, Performance Max only works as well as the data behind it. Google recommends optimizing for qualified or converted leads instead of every form, for example through enhanced conversions for leads or offline conversion imports (Google Ads Help). LeadMetrics stores the gclid with every lead and sends leads and won deals with their value to Google Ads through the Conversion API.
