Data Strength

Google's measure for the quality of your first-party data

In short

Data strength is Google's term for how complete and well connected an advertiser's own data is when it reaches Google Ads: tagging, CRM data, customer data and click IDs.

Data strength is Google's term for how complete and well connected an advertiser's own data is when it reaches Google Ads. The more conversions Google can match with clean data, the better automated bidding can learn.

Google's four steps

Google structures its recommendations in four steps (Google Ads Help):

  1. Connect your data sources: Google tag on every page, upgrade to Google tag gateway, link Google Analytics, connect CRM and offline data through Data Manager.
  2. Maximize your signals: at least three identifiers per conversion, for example gclid, IP address and hashed email or phone number, and send all conversion events.
  3. Activate Google AI: Smart Bidding, for example with target ROAS, and first-party audiences.
  4. Prove your ROI: experiments and marketing mix models.

Data Strength Uplift

Since September 2026, Google Ads shows the Data Strength Uplift metric. It estimates how many additional conversions your data setup makes visible. Google doesn't disclose how it's calculated. It refers to measured conversions, not additional revenue.

In lead generation

For lead generation, steps 1 and 2 with CRM data matter most: if closed deals are sent to Google with gclid and hashed customer data, bidding learns which clicks lead to customers, not just to form submissions.
